Торонто - Так могло быть - Unbuilt Toronto

My desire to start this blog (aside from heavy suggestions made by @ashley_bartlett) was pretty much triggered by a want to express my love for Toronto and how I wish the city would take the opportunity to grow, when given it. Well, since starting the blog, more of my other loves (fashion, music, art, men…) have filtered in, but I digress.A book I bought last year has really sunk into my head and, admittedly, has become a little bit of an obsession for me lately. Unbuilt Toronto is simply fantastic and enraging at the same time. It explores the buildings or urban development ideas that would have really revolutionized the way we (Torontonians) look at our city, ultimately just to be turned down.One of the proposed adjustments was a major infrastructure adjustment centred around University street; the city proposed to have a round-about/circular intersection placed just south of Queen street. on University, turning into “Queen’s Park Avenue”. Basically, it would have been the sort of character the downtown grid needed, but alas, because of market crashes of earlier months and such. Anywho, I came across this image recently that an artist had rendered, suggesting what Vimy Circle would look like in the here-and-now if it had gone through. Basically, I’m still crying (onto tissue box number 3). Aside from the brilliance of the idea of Vimy Circle, there were other street realignments and additions that were proposed that almost entirely were scratched off the board. If you have time, please go and check out the book. There’s a map on page 27 that shows the proposed downtown core changes. It really is quite thrilling to imagine what sort of difference it would have made to the way we look at, use and treat Toronto’s downtown.
